Masterminds Week 2: Send Me a Postcard!

Thursday morning we saw the Masterminds invade the library and again we talked about travelling, especially since its summer vacation for us all! So there were many journeys and camping trips to discuss!

We started our day off by colouring and decorating some postcards to send over the summer! We also read through some books and then went on a scavenger hunt through the library!

The scavenger hunt took us all around the world from Paris and back to Canada again. Here's some pictures of the kids on their hunt!

Some of the clues required the Masterminds to use the computer to find a specific book in the library!

Another part of the hunt called for the kids to finish a Canadian Map Puzzle!

It was a fun day and we look forward to continuing our journeys here at the library!

Guest Wednesday Week 2 - Tammy and her Owl, Don Quixote

One of our greatest and most memorable Guest Wednesdays of the Summer has definitely been our visit from Tammy and Maya and their rescued great horned owl, Don Quixote!!! What a sight it was for all of us to meet Don Quixote! His beautiful feathers, hypnotizing eyes and almost robotic-like movements left the kids in awe!!!

Tammy and her daughter Maya, told us about how she came to become Don Quixote's caretaker, and how when he was young he broke his wing and now has some metal rods in his wings and a lack of tendons and therefore cannot fly anymore.

Tammy now takes care of Don Quixote and uses him as an educational bird to teach others about wildlife!

Here are some of the pictures from the day!

Superheroes Week 2: Send Me a Postcard!

Whoooooops, looks like I only took one picture at our Wednesday morning Superhero meeting!!! Bad Amanda!

But perhaps the lack of photos speaks for the huge amount of fun we had at the library!!! This week we talked about travel and mail! So our craft for the day was to colour and decorate our very own postcards to send away to someone over the summer!

I got the template for the postcards from Miss Martha Stewart! Thanks Martha! Here's where you can get them! Martha Stewart Postcards!

Here's Keith's Postcard, front and back!

We also tried to guess how many countries there are in the world... then we tried naming them all and when that didn't work we listened to a song that would help us remember, some if not all of the countries in the world!!!

Here's the song - it's a classic, that is if you remember the Animaniacs cartoon, like me!!

We discussed and talked about flying on planes and travelling to foreign lands and such! I set up three maps and each kids choose a place where they've been, are going and wish to go!

We finished off by playing a memorization game revolving around what we would pack to take on our upcoming trips - imaginary or real.

Here's how you play:

Memory game: I Packed My Suitcase
(See Activity Village at www.activityvillage.co,uk/i_packed_my_suitcase.htm)
Sit in a circle
The first child chooses a word that begins with the letter ‘a’ and says, “I packed my suitcase with an apple” The next child chooses a word beginning with a ‘b’ and repeats the sentence, adding their word: “I packed my suitcase with an apple and a banana” Move through the alphabet

When a child cannot remember the list or makes a mistake, they are out!

It was lots of fun! I was very surprised by everyone's awesome memory! Although... we did end up packing a lot of animals to bring on our trip! I think there was a cat, elephant, llama and things got out of hand! WHO PACKS AN ELEPHANT WHEN GOING ON A TRIP!?!?!? .... I'm sure there's someone out there!

Anyways we did do some reading! We read Robert Munsch's "Too Much Stuff!", one of my favourites about Temina, a girl who has a hard time packing for her trip as there are so many toys and fun things to bring!

We also two other lovely books, "Knuffle Bunny Free" and "No T. Rex in the Library" by Toni Buzzeo and illustrated by Sachiko Yoshikawa.

Book Review "Horseradish: Bitter Truths You Can't Avoid"

by Lemony Snicket

I loved the Series of Unfortunate Events by Lemony Snicket growing up... unfortunately for some reason I never finished the series! Either I outgrew the Series waiting for the next book to come out ... or I was too creeped out!

But really the series is like no other, and the creator behind the tales is not only ominous in his writing but hilarious and clever!

This book, Horseradish, is a collection of quotes from the works of Lemony Snicket that are honest and sometimes harsh about the world. If you want to get an idea of the book you need only read the prologue, which is very very pragmatic and has quite the harsh ending that kinda slaps you right in the face!

The Quotes are divided into different aspects of life, like work, school, entertainment, and books! I picked a few of my favourites - and of course they're about books! Here they are!!

This one, by the by, is probably one of my favourite quotes ever!! Mr. Snicket is quite clever, indeed!

Sidekicks Week 2! Superheroes!

The second week of the Summer Reading Club saw the reappearance of some mask vigilantes in the library, these ones though, were mini-sized and oh-so-cute!

Miss Carly and the Sidekicks, worked together to make some of the most colourful and fantastic-o looking superhero masks!

After fitting on their new masks and saving the day, the sidekicks settled down for some stories and songs and a general fun time all around!

Guest Wednesday! - Despicable Me

For the second week in a row, we had a fabulous movie afternoon in the library with the kids for our Guest Wednesday! One of my favourites, Despicable Me! Such an awesome and lovely movie! The minions are definitely one of the best things EVA!!!!

So we had the kids come into the library and served juice boxes and gummy candies for snacks! After that we just sat back and enjoyed the show!

This week for our Special Guest Wednesday we will be having Diana from the Columbia Basin Water Smart stopping in to visit us! See the previous post for more details: Guest Wednesday - Diana, Columbia Basin Water Smart!

What's a happening here at the library next week you ask!? Well on Wednesday, our Special Guest is Diana from the Columbia Basin Water Smart, and we'll be learning all about where our water comes from and why it's so important to conserve water!!!

Here's the poster:

Hope to see you then!

Masterminds Week 1: All About Superheroes!

Woot woot! We continued our superhero themed with the Masterminds on Thursday morning! We explored through books that brought us to Gotham City, Metropolis and science fields where Bruce Banner became the Hulk!

We read some books, made some superhero masks and played a few rounds of pin the symbol on the superhero!

We ended our superhero-filled day by putting our superhero skills to the test with a scavenger hunt!!! Here's some of the clues I made up for the kids to go through! It was lots of fun!!
